GHOST, an acronym of its official title "The Global Honoured Organisation of Specialised Tasks", is an ever changing group of "chosen" powerful elementals destined to prevent the world from falling into chaos. While centred around the initial six possessors of an active "guardian gene", the group has often recruited other strong elementals throughout history with the aim to collectively possess the greatest extent of elemental power in humanity; an aspect which has proved to be essential in the achievement of their eternal goals of world peace.
GHOST and its six core members, of which are traditionally referred to as Guardians, are chosen through a natural recurring process known as the Spiritual Cycle. This cycle determined by two factors: the possession of a gene respectively called the Guardian Gene, and its period of activation when its possessor grows within their physical prime.
This gene, and the whole purpose of guardians is most widely believed to be the next phase of human evolution and the species' will for self-preservation.
The Guardian Gene
The cycle of the elemental power and duty given to the guardians is a difficult concept to fully explain. Though elemental energy and how humans manage to use it is vastly within the understanding of science, it is only just manageable to analyse and explain (roughly) the process of spiritual inheritance, not to mention it being theoretically impossible to recreate.
In a brief sense, becoming a guardian may quite possibly be purely down to chance.
The guardian gene exists in six dominant variants of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Ice and Plant. However there are a few remote theories explaining the existence of other mutations which can induce similar effects to other elementals.
Effects to the inheritors
There can often at times be up to dozens of bearers of a certain guardian Gene of a certain element, however only one can be activated during a bearer's lifetime.
The activation of the gene causes an extreme heightening in the inheritor's elemental ability to the point where they become the most powerful wielder of their element alive. As well as this, their metabolism increases, and lung and immune system capacities increase. The ability to keep fit becomes noticeably easier for the guardian.
Along with these benefits, exist a multitude of life-threatening negatives. The gene is strongly connected to the psychic consciousness of it's bearer, which is affected by their morals and physical experiences. The guardian must continue to commit deeds which he or she feels are moral and for the benefit of humanity in order to live a fulfilling life. A negative persona of the bearer causes the gene to violently react with their immune system and mental health, an effect if untreated, can shorten life spans by up to 30 years, induce dementia, and increase the threat of sudden death.
The subjectivity of morality itself and interpretations of such varying widely between societies and individuals has resulted in the necessary creation of intensely strict moral codes throughout the history of most guardian conclaves. These codes vary in definition and intensity widely throughout history, and can often come under the either beneficial or detrimental influence of one or many powerful individuals within the organisation.
In theory, if a guardian was for example brainwashed to believe that murder of innocents or theft was moral, then he or she would be immune to the damaging effects of their guardian gene.
Transferral of power
The "choosing" of the next possible guardian after the death or degradation of their predecessors' is hard to pin down on a single theory. In many cases it can be heredity, such as the case of Kenneth and Eric Lysander, but in others it is passed down to a completely random individual. The most powerful elemental in the population does not always become the a new guardian, as in some cases even elemental blanks can be chosen. This conflict of theories within scientific explanation is often used as a driving reason as to the existence of a divine spirit or force playing part in the universe by the many religious groups.
The system of inheritance seems to activate according to location as oppose to random people within the population. This can be confirmed by the likelihood of Asiatic and/or Indian guardians being chosen in equal balance to other ethic groups, despite the population of both peoples being momentously larger.
Once a person has been chosen, they grow in power; often surprisingly fast, whilst the previous guardian loses his/her power through a previous of psychic exchange known simply as a "Guardian Transferral". The time of the changeover is either when they die in-service or of natural causes, or when that such guardian comes around the age of 50-80, exiting their period of greatest physical prime as they grow old. This event usually always results in the retirement of the said guardian, however often they chose to stay in service until the next chosen presents themselves. Changeover periods can range from a approximately month to well over a year.
A critical issue lies in the range of the changeover periods. The person chosen can often be as young as 12, where it is often a difficult time for GHOST to keep their duty running smoothly while they constantly wait for them to present themselves. There have been countless times throughout history where this flaw in transferral has resulted in major strains on the success and continued survival of the group.
Issues with the cycle's stability
On top of the unpredictability of the cycle being transferred to others, the spiritual cycle can be heavily damaged (though not destroyed completely) in several ways. If all the guardians were to die within the same time period, the spiritual cycle loses balance, and it may be up to a whole decade before a new Guardian is chosen. As such, the Guardians fight not only to keep humanity safe, but to keep each other alive, or risk the cycle going out of balance.
If a guardian murders another of his kind, the displacement of the cycle for the dead guardian can be so great this his/her predecessor is granted only a fraction of power. These people are known as "Off-cast Guardians", or "Runts" in a more disrespectable slang.
The most critical weakness of the cycle is the fact that it exists physically in a separate spiritual plane, known as the "empyrean", which is an alternate dimension which sits outside the material universe. The Empyrean can actually be damaged, or even destroyed through physical means as oppose to it's natural breakdown and regeneration due to the spiritual climate of living being's emotions.
If it is completely destroyed by some method of physical intervention, the existence of guardians themselves will disappear completely.

First Team of Guardians (Approx. 0 to 5 BCE)
Though an exact date is almost impossible to determine, a rough estimate of when the evolution of the "guardian gene" was first realised, and the formation date of the first team of powerful elementals is theorised to be around several thousand years ago, which is marked in the conventional calendar as year "0", where years afterwards are labelled as the "Common Era" (CE).
The guardian gene itself is believed to have emerged several million years ago, slowly growing in prominence with the progression of millennia.
Nazi Influence (1938-1942)
A Nazi envisionment of the future of the guardians Auserwählter des Schicksals, meaning Chosen of Destiny. Only ever consisted of two guardians before being abolished with the collapse of Nazi Germany.
Cyberpunk era (2100's)
The power they once held in centuries past has all but died away with the advancement of time. The once proud team of guardians are left with nothing but the curse of having to protect the inhabitants of an ignorant and terrifying world; a world populated by a frightened society starved of hope and bent to the wills of by the monolithic corporations that tower above them like gods, moulding the world's affairs to their very whims like clay. The world is dying, slowly suffocating in a pit of its own greed, and GHOST have no choice but to push forward in a world that only gets bigger and darker with every turn.
One of the most renowned members of the organisation. Damien Anderson restructured GHOST into a more militaristic group, completely re-hauling the ranking system to suit this new operational style while introducing the role of Deputy Commander. Also notable in establishing an intelligence branch and setting up rings of informants.
Noted in having the clairvoyance to future proof the rank structure of GHOST as an advisor to Damien Anderson by suggesting the institutionalisation of the ranks of Major and Colonel. Despite abandoning his talents early on after the death of his comrade Damien Anderson, he soon becomes rather significant in his own capacity as leader of GHOST during some of its most trying times during 2121.
After the organisation was officially exterminated in the year 2122 due to prior events that had managed to paint GHOST as a group of international terrorists rather than global protectors, Anderson's former pupil was documented as being the only surviving member of GHOST's Primary Division. From here, Li-Pau managed to rebuild GHOST in the coming years and lead it as its Commander during the trying times that lied ahead.
The GHOST Organisation has a simplified rank structure that is applied to its members. However, during times of low membership and a lack of personnel, many of these roles are left unfilled. Ranking and status are determined solely by rank, experience, and at times willingness to lead; much like a the hierarchical system of a martial art.
|Recruit||Basic entry level of enlisted personnel (regardless of status as Guardian or non-Guardian)||Rank slide|
|Corporal||Non-Commissioned Officer rank given to Recruits who are deemed to have passed all of their basic training. They only hold authority over recruits, however are expected to be fully responsible of their duties as living examples to work off for new recruits.||"|
|Sergeant||Available promotion for GHOST Personnel. Designated as leader of Strike Teams of between 2 and 10 personnel.||"|
|Lieutenant||Commissioned Officer rank of personnel deemed to have leadership qualities. Commands between 2 and 10 Strike Teams (Operational Unit). Entrusted with mission assignments.||"|
|Captain||Commissioned Officer rank designated to those in command between 2 and 5 Operational Units (Mission Detachment).||"|
|Major||Commissioned Officer rank assigned to those who lead at least 2 Mission Detachments (Command Group).||"|
|Colonel||In times of crisis, when more than one Command Group is required, a Colonel may be appointed to oversee them directly. A Colonel reports directly to the Deputy Commander.||"|
|Deputy Commander||Secondary Commander of GHOST. They have command over all personnel with the exception of the Commander, and are traditionally intended to serve as his/her equal in times of tactical debate. Default leader of the organisation in the absence of the Commander. Highest rank attainable by a non-Guardian. Equivalent rank to a General. Noted to have been a position first established by Damien Anderson.||"|
|Commander||Leader of the team. Is required to possess the Guardian Gene. Essentially fills the role of Field Marshall and President of the organisation. Has the authority to grant members commissions and to create new ones. When all six Guardians are deployed as an Operational Team, the Commander is the de-facto leader of the group.||"|
As well as the official chain of command, their are some positions that are designed to compliment it, while others fall out with it entirely.
|Rank Title||Role||Insignia (If applicable)||Worn|
|Informant||A position outwith the official chain of command, these personnel report to GHOST from outside the organisation. They typically work as from within organisations that are hostile towards GHOST or observe intended targets from a distance, for the benefit of the GHOST team. They report to Information Officers.||Right of chest|
|Information Officer||A position outwith the official chain of command, an Information Officer is tasked with espionage and data gathering for further analysis. They are regarded to be to hold the same authority as a Sergeant, and are required to collaborate with Commissioned Officers. However, most information they have collected is exclusively left for the Chief Information Officer, who is their direct superior.||Right of chest|
|Chief Information Officer||A position outwith the official chain of command, with authority equal to that of a Colonel. Handles all intelligence reports. Chief of security and foreign affairs. Reports directly the the Commander. Noted to have authority over all GHOST Personnel with the exception of Deputy Commander and Commander.||Right of chest|
Due to the extreme unpredictability of a Guardian's skill level when pressed into service, there is always at least one role allocated towards their training and physical monitoring. A role available to all GHOST Commissioned Officers (including in rare cases the Commander). Personnel Trainers have direct authority over one or more Recruits (typically a Guardian) and are entrusted with their training. They must also inform the Commander when the Recruit they have been entrusted with has passed all aspects of basic training. They are given a separate rank slide so they can be easily identified by their trainees.
Emblems of the divisions, placed on the left of the chest and on the right sleeve of the official uniform:
Based in Upper Africa. Consisting of the tradtional guardians and associated officers.
- Mathieu Dalton (Commander) [Guardian]
- Laurence Valentine (Deputy Commander) [Guardian]
- Alison Katsura (Lieutenant - Personnel Trainer) [Guardian]
- Miki Albraun (Sergeant - Information Officer) [Guardian]
- Li-Pau Nao (Corporal - Chief Information Officer)
- Eric Lysander (Recruit) [Guardian]
- Jacinta Hansen (Recruit) [Guardian]
Based in Greenland. Consists primarily of other elementals who have willingly joined GHOST. The group has had severed ties with the main headquarters back in Africa, however it is noted that the organisation still serves them diligently.
Located upon the southern tip of the India lies a division noted to have been "concerned with developmental military research", in official records. Little is known beyond this fact and they have not made contact with the rest of GHOST in over five years. It is theorised, by Mathieu Dalton, that Kenneth Lysander may have ventured here after going AWOL from Block 441.

The GHOST organisation does utilise a type of uniform, which consists only of a track jacket depicting ranks and division. The uniforms are usually only used for specific missions that require a demonstration of their presence, for nearly all missions are conducted in typical wearer-determined civvies for the purposes of infiltration.
