Beneath the bustling metropolises that span the African Continent, a plague has come to blight the neglected parts of society. Known commonly as the Chute Scavenger, these animalistic monsters haunt some of the most inhospitable areas on the planet. While genetically the same as Homo Sapiens Sapiens, these creatures have long abandoned any form of civilisation.

Origins

The Umbran Alliance

During the reign Umbran Alliance, concerns for the health and safety of workers were completely abandoned. Struggling to survive the aftermath of peak oil and the volcanic winters that followed Yellowstone's erruption, while attempting to maintain a semblance of society, desperate times called for desperate measures as the entire resources of the continent were put into the refining of biofuels. It was hoped that with this resource, the great unified Africa would be able to establish itself as a world superpower on par with the North American Alliance, Siberian Communik and the People's Republic of Asia.

While the venture was a success and biofuel production went into overdrive, the cost to civilian life was insurmountable. Millions died due to starvation while others became ill due to the chemicals they were forced to work with. In the heavily industrialised settlements, many resorted to drastic measures to survive.

While those involved in the harvesting of algae, crops and livestock recovered, those forced to toil in the factories suffered. While the rich profited handsomely, the ones at the poorest echelons of society had resorted to savagery in order to maintain some semblance of an existence.

It is theorised by many scientists that this is when the modern day "Chute Scavenger" first developed. An instinctive need to survive coupled with a lifetime of exposure to heavy industrial metals (such as arsenic and mercury), and other less than savoury chemical compounds, affected the mind in an extremely detrimental manner. While for some the savagery was only a temporary period in their lives, for others it became a way of life.

Collapse of Industry

The collapse of the Umbran Alliance and the mass unemployment that followed only further widened this divide of savagery. Those who could afford to leave, did everything in their power to migrate to more habitable areas. However, it was those who couldn't that degraded further into monsters. Men, women and children who had had their minds poisoned by the industrial refuse that polluted water sources. Workers who had been forced to make home with their family within the crumbling husks of defunct Biodiesel factories. The exposure of heavy metals and a variety of other poisonous substances eventually came to change the physiology of these people in subtle ways.

Many died in the years that followed as the insane remnants of human civilization fought amongst themselves like pack wolves and attacked human settlements with unnatural ferocity as they came to dine on the flesh of their kin. Within the political zones of Sector VII and VIII, as the old biodiesel factories were decommissioned so that new (more efficient) ones could be built, these creatures were almost completely wiped out. The strong survived though primal cunning and instinct.

Yet, within the areas of Africa that had been abandoned by the corporations, local governments did not have the resources to deal with them nor did they want. In their eyes, these creatures were still human. While they had resorted to savagery and cannibalism they were still capable of rational thought. Thus, the population remained unchecked as humans who, due to generational exposure, were now more resilient to the harmful chemicals they had grown up in, slowly built up in number.

Current Situation

Of course, there was no unity amongst these people, as they continued to survive in packs. Many migrated to what they conceived to be grander pasteurs and by the 22nd century most have come to illegally inhabit the African political sectors. It has been confirmed that this species has managed to produce at, the very least, six generations since the fall of the Umbran Alliance.

Genetics

They are, essentially, genetically the same as humans and no variance has been found in the basic structure of Chute Scavenger DNA. Although, evidence suggests that their genetic code may be more robust than that of humans. So far results have been inconclusive.

Anatomy

Look like stunted humans. Adolescents are typically about four to six feet tall. What appears to be growths are usually adornments.

Physiology

Good at conserving heat. High levels of mercury in the blood stream. Other chemicals. Someone else *cough*Lither*cough* could flesh this one out with some real science on how mercury makes people go crazy.

Senses

Chute Scavengers have developed more advanced smell receptors than their human cousins. This may allow for them to hunt better. It has also been found that they have moderately better vision in darkness than other humans.

Health

It seems that this strain of humanity is far more resiliant to infections and industrial chemicals.

Behaviour

They are hostile carnivores by nature, surviving off humans, stray animals, and even themselves when resources are low.

Since their descent into mercury induced madness, they appear to have lost considerable amounts of intelligence (which can be likened to that of the long-extinct 'monkeys'). However, there are many urban legends that depict they are still just as smart, plotting to overtrhow the humans on the ground level.

Chute Scavengers always operate in packs of between two and sixteen. It is incredibly rare to find a lone Chute Scavenger as it seems that their tactics for acquisition of prey relies on a basic societal structure. Scientists believe that it may also be to ensure an alternative food source, of their own kin, should they fail to acquire sufficient amounts.

A minority of these bewildering creatures do seem to be able to cooperate with humans and pairs of the have been sited to be operating with Upper African criminal gangs.

Ecology

As what could now be termed as a sub-species of humans, they have adapted to best survive the multitude of uninhabitable subterranean catacombs that lurk beneath the main metropolis levels.

Cultural References

It's not that they have forgotten to be human. They are not the kind of monster one would find in a story of 'science-fiction'. It is more that they are our cousins who have resorted to the old ways to survive. Perhaps they may prove to have been right in this decision. Perhaps we are now the defunct race. For, in many ways, they are far more human than us.
